Hayward Field in Eugene, OR is the birthplace of Nike, Steve Prefontaine, Olympic Trials, World Records, and the site of the best Track and Field in the World. It’s named “Historic” Hayward Field and that’s what the Grants Pass Caveman Track and Field Team did....Made History. For only the second time in school History, the last time in 1947, the Cavemen won the Oregon State Title and the first time winning the title outright (they won the coin flip to break a tie in ’47).
It was a complete Team effort, starting with a lifetime best throw in the Shot Put and 3rd place finish by Dylan Hanley. Dylan was not projected to score in the event so it got the momentum going In their favor. From there, Joey Malloy had a lifetime performance in the Pole Vault. Joey earned a trip to State by being selected as a “wildcard” to finishing 3rd overall and earning his Team 6 points in the process. Dustin Harrah and Larry Cotton finished 3rd and 7th respectively to earn another crucial 7. 5 points. The two Jumpers will go down as the best HJ duo in School History. In the Discus, Calvin Claassen finished off a spectacular Season by finishing 2nd and he’s only a Sophomore. As the points added up so did the energy from the 12,000 people in attendance. Zac Hannan had a monster day finishing 3rd in the 100 and setting a school record in the process, 3rd in the 110 hurdles and a lifetime best mark, and 2nd in the 300 hurdles (another lifetime PR and school record); on the day Zac earned his Team 20 points. Capping the day and cementing History, Keil Nicholas was Best in State on this day throwing a lifetime best throw of 189 feet and change and setting a school Record in the Process. His Teammate, Dylan Hanley, had a gutty 3rd place performance and the two earned 16 points for their Team.
When it was all said and done, 7 of the 8 participants scored points for the Cavemen, 2 school records were broken, and what was projected to come down to a point maybe 2 turned out to be a 12.5 point buffer between GP and the 2nd place Team. The Boys saved their best efforts for the end of the Year when it counted the most, in front of a sell-out crowd, and making School History in the process.
