Grants Pass High School has numerous CTE (Career & Technical Education) courses; however, one of the most overlooked classes is Robotics. Likely because, Robotics as a formal class is new this year. This (new) class has many resources and offers experience with hands on robotics design, engineering, and software design. The class is easy and fun; the more complicated you design your robot the more difficult it is to engineer! This year the Robotics classes are building advanced robots, designed specifically to meet the requirements of this year’s official robotics game designed by the VEX Robotics competition team that is played all over the world. Each “bot” must be able to maneuver swiftly and precisely within a 12’x12’ arena. The “bots” must pass inspection, insuring that they are not larger than the 18”x18”x18” regulation size before the competition begins. This regulation of size makes the building of a proficient robot difficult. But this demanding challenge hasn't deterred the various teams from engineering four functional competition robots with various pros and cons. Each robot is capable of completion of the different tasks of the competition, implementing different methods to solve the various challenges at hand. Don’t think that the entire year is dedicated to this particular VEX challenge, there are many smaller “Sub-Challenges” that students can create, and are only limited by one’s imagination.
