State Assessment testing for students in 3rd through 8th grade and 11th grade will begin during the month of April and extend through the month of May. Students will be tested in English Language Arts (reading and writing) and math using the Smarter Balance Assessment. Science will be assessed in grades 5, 8, and 11 using the OAKS assessment.
There are a number of ways parents can support their child in their academic efforts and help their child to do their best on Oregon State Assessments. Ideas include:
-
Encourage children to monitor progress and try to solve problems at home.
-
Put the testing dates on the calendar and talk about how they are preparing for the tests
-
Read with your child and play word games, solve puzzles, and enjoy learning.
-
Ask questions about what they are learning and how that relates to other parts of their lives.
-
Celebrate new learning.
-
Have your child practice relaxing before going to bed to make sure they get a good night’s sleep every night.
-
Talk about nutrition and let your child figure out a power breakfast for the days before testing and on the day of testing.
-
Express confidence in and high expectations for their performance.
-
Practice using some sample test items with your child and maybe write new items.
-
If schedules allow, volunteer at the school and help with motivational activities within the classrooms.
