On Thursday October 23rd the honors students and several teachers of Grants Pass High went out into the community and got their hands dirty doing Grunt work. Ordinarily these kids would have been sitting in class reading a book, listening to a lecture, doing some math equation or writing but on the 23rd they were doing the exact opposite.
This is the fifth year that students have picked up their shovels, clippers, rakes, and gloves to participate in the Block-oid work day to make the community a little prettier. The Block-oid work day is in its fifth year. It was started by Martin Zottola. Mr.Zottola is an English teacher at Grants Pass High School.
This year the students went to the Food Bank Farm, South Middle School, and Lincoln, Highland, and Parkside elementary schools. At these locations students complete various tasks such as clearing away blackberries, cleaning out gardens, painting sheds, and clearing pathways. This year an approximate of 124 students participated.
As soon as the students walked off the buses the rain started pouring down. According to several students, “you could barely see five feet in front of your face.” But even though it was cold and rainy, and the students were drenched to the bone they work for for about three and a half hours. Even though the conditions were miserable the students seemed to have a great time, so the next time you get a chance to do community service I strongly encourage you to go and do it even if it might not be clean and easy
