The tradition of arches at graduation has been going on at Grants Pass High School for over 40 years.
“Only me and two other staff members have ever been in charge of arches.” explains counselor Enes Craft when asked about the tradition.
Each senior gets an opportunity to walk under each arch. This tradition is special for Grants Pass High School seniors because no other schools have it. Another reason is for the beauty of the arches, all the roses that have been collected from the community and placed on the arch by freshman, sophomores, and juniors. Boys and girls are able to hold them during graduation.
There has been 60 arch bearers up until the past 5 years, when there have been many more. Underclassman spend all day making the arches and going through rehearsals with and without the seniors.
“I did arches last year and had such a great time!” stated sophomore Madison Munyon. “The best part is looking at the seniors faces as they walk under each arch; you can definitely feel the excitement to be done with high school and starting the next phases of their lives.” she added.
It is a great opportunity for those who are unable to dress up for a dance to still have fun and get all dolled up. The tradition will continue to be a fun thing for all students at graduation.
