Riverside Elementary has been selected to take part in a nation-wide research study through the Rockville Institute. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Healthy Schools Program when administered through an on-site vs. web-based process. The study will last four years, involving site visits from the researchers, and phone conferences with staff members, as well as professional development for staff through workshops and webinars.
The Healthy Schools Program is a school wellness improvement program that is intended to promote, improve and sustain a healthier learning environment for students, staff, and parents. Backed by The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, the program itself includes a six step process that analyzes the schools daily physical activity, nutrition and quality of physical education, as well as staff and student wellness.
The benefits that Riverside will gain from this program are the following:
-
More physically active students
-
Projected increase in overall attendance
-
Increased academic performance
-
Decreased negative behavior in school
-
Professional development for staff members
-
Recognition as a National Healthy School (Gold, Silver, Bronze)
-
Happier, healthier, smarter students
