Lincoln ELL Students Benefit from After School Program

It’s the end of the day, and the dismissal bell rings! Students line up with backpacks in hand, ready to head off to their next “adventure “. However, these students aren’t walking outside to the bus, or to a waiting parent. These English Language Learner (ELL) students are making their way to the ELL After-school Program happening in room 1, to get up to 45 minutes of additional academic support.

This is the second year of the ELL after-school program. The program happens every Monday through Thursday, with students coming either once or twice a week, depending on how much help they need. ELL students participate in the after-school program because they need extra reading, math, spelling or homework help. Depending on the day, you may see kindergarteners or first graders working on sight words. Second and third graders may be working on homework or writing summaries of a story they are reading in class. Fourth graders may be working on math or quizzing each other on this week’s spelling words. Fifth graders may be taking a practice OAKS science test or reviewing their most recent math test.

Even though this year there was no funding to provide transportation home for the students, parents didn’t seem to mind having to pick up their students after school.  They appreciate the extra help they are receiving and see that it is positively impacting their child’s success in the classroom! The program depends heavily on volunteer student tutors and the ELL staff, Mr. Padilla and Mrs. Diego. Last year’s program had help from student teachers from Southern Oregon University wanting to gain experience working with elementary students. (Lincoln recently hired one of the university student volunteers to help in the Resource Room with Ms. Krull) The program will continue to run until May 22nd, the week before Memorial Day.  If you have any questions, or are interested in helping, please contact Mr. Padilla at 541-474-5770 for more information.
