Welcome back Roadrunners

Welcome back Roadrunners, we are excited for the 2015-16 school year to start and I know you are too.  Our custodians have been busy this summer cleaning, painting and getting the school in tip top shape,  so if you see them, let them know how much you appreciate all they do for us.

Check out our Learning Center’s new location, Kelso never looked better.  Another change you may want to check out is our new “thinking spot”.  It is a spot where students can take some time to think and grow if they are not making good choices or need some space.

Something new you will be hearing about throughout the year is a district wide initiative “Attendance Matters”.  It is our goal to improve attendance at Redwood and throughout the district.  As we looked at the data from last year, we saw that 28% of our students (112 students) missed more than 12 days of school and 36% of our students (144 students) were tardy 10 or more times.

People tend to grow concerned only about students who miss consecutive days of school, but occasional absences can be just as disruptive as they can add up before you know it – just two to three days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.

We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your children to school as much as possible.

Families can make a difference. From a child’s first day of formal schooling, the family can set the expectation that school attendance matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless someone is truly sick.

Let’s work together to improve the attendance at Redwood.  If you have any ideas or needs, please let us know.

Looking forward to making 2014-15 the best year yet!  Welcome Back!
